What is UMF Manuka honey?

UMF Manuka honey is a unique natural product that has been proven to offer fantastic health benefits including superior treatment for skin conditions and wounds.  It is a honey with a special effect.

Many honeys have been used for thousands of years because of their antibacterial properties, but recent research at the University of Waikato New Zealand, hospitals around the world and research centres in Germany have identified ‘Active' Manuka Honey as something very special.

‘Active' Manuka honey is produced by bees that collect pollen from the Manuka Tree (Leptospermum scoparium) found in uncultivated areas throughout New Zealand. Many honeys have some degree of anti bacterial activity due to the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a well known antiseptic, however Professor Peter Molan MBE of the University of Waikato has discovered an antibacterial property in ‘Active' Manuka that other honeys don't have - known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

The Unique Manuka Factor has many applications for human well being, including general well being, an aid to digestion, skin care, wound dressing - and of course the enjoyment of just eating Manuka!

Professor Molan has suggested that taking a spoonful of ‘Active' Manuka UMF honey 30 minutes before meals can help to relieve an assortment of uncomfortable digestive symptoms - and a number of people have said they benefit from Manuka honey use with symptoms such as stomach ulcers, digestion problems and Gilbert's Syndrome. UMF Manuka honey has also been used very effectively for the treatment of wounds from hospitals to the miliatry theatre.

The Unique Manuka Factor relates to the potency of the antibacterial activity of the honey. Professor Molan devised the testing method against which every batch of ‘Active' Manuka Honey has to be certified to prove its UMF value. The UMF numbers derive from a standard laboratory test with ‘Active' Manuka being compared with a standard antiseptic (phenol) to prove its potency. From these tests UMF factors are shown to relate to the strength of an antiseptic solution.

Generally for  medical use it is recommended to use active Manuka honey with a rating of 10+ and Apicare use 15+ in their skincare range.

Not all Manuka honey is UMF+ and therefore does not offer the potency of properties described, also not all packaged honeys labelled as UMF are certified by the University of Waikato to be UMF.

The term (or mark) ‘UMF' is actually a registered trademark, to protect you, the consumer, so that you know you are getting Manuka honey that does actually contain the healing properties it has become famous for. There are criteria that must be met for its use on packaged honeys is;

  1. It has the name UMF clearly stated on the label of the honey jar.
  2. It is packed into jars and labelled in New Zealand.
  3. It is from a New Zealand company licensed by the Active Manuka Honey Association (AHMA) to use the name UMF.
  4. It has the UMF licensee's name on the front

At Simply Manuka we are delighted to bring you our fabulous collection of New Zealand Manuka Honey Products using certified Active UMF Manuka Honey.

(The procedure for the rating of Manuka honey is currently under review in New Zealand as there are a lot of different ratings appearing in the market. Apicare use UMF 15+ Manuka honey in all their products, UMF is the original and still best recognised and accepted rating for Manuka honey)
